Palmdale, CA — Assemblyman Tom Lackey has been awarded “Legislator of the Year” by the national advocacy organization Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), in recognition for his work to keep drunk and drugged drivers off the roads.
Mothers Against Drunk Driving expressed appreciation for Lackey in announcing the award, stating “In 2021, Assembly Member Tom Lackey authored AB 282 forbidding the practice of diversion for impaired drivers that had become common place as a result of a 2020 law (AB 3234)… Thankfully, two appellate court decisions in California invalidated the 2020 law, accomplishing the goal of Assembly Member Lackey’s legislation.”
In response to the award, Lackey thanked MADD, saying: “It is an honor to receive this acknowledgment of our work to keep our roads safe. Drunk driving is claiming too many lives in the High Desert and needs to be addressed. I thank MADD for their partnership on this issue and look forward to continuing to work on this issue in the Assembly.“
Assemblyman Tom Lackey is a leading voice for public safety in the legislature. Which is why first responders overwhelmingly support his campaign for reelection. He has endorsements from the San Bernardino Professional Firefighters Local 935, CAL FIRE Local 2881, the California Police Chiefs Association, Crime Victims United, the Police Officers Research Association of California, the California Correctional Peace Officers Association, the California Association of Highway Patrolmen, and the California Professional Firefighters.
Before entering elected office, Lackey worked as a classroom special education teacher and as a California Highway Patrolman. Tom started his political career as a member of the Palmdale Elementary School Board, then moving on to the Palmdale City Council. He was elected to the California State Assembly in 2014 and has been serving the High Desert there for the past eight years.
Tom lives in Palmdale with his wife, Linda. Together, they have two children. Tom is running for re-election in the 34th Assembly District, which includes portions of high desert communities in San Bernardino County, South East Kern County, and Northern Los Angeles County.
